All are good questions that come into mind of anyone who is going to take the leap and get their teeth fixed by braces. There are a lot of details, and you should know what you’re getting into. Follow our guide to answer all the questions about braces Lehigh valley residents ask all the time.
What are braces?
Braces (also known as orthodontics) is the art and science of teeth arrangement. With braces, you can fix all the problems related to how your teeth are arranged in your jaw. If you suffer from crowded teeth, crooked teeth, gapped teeth, overbite, underbite, or jaw size mismatch, then braces are probably the answer for you.
How do they work?
There are many systems of braces, but they all rely on a common principle of continuous, light force. The braces apply a very small amount of force on each tooth, and with continuous force comes movement. That is why braces take such a long time to achieve results. If the force is too large, you can suffer from irreparable damage to your teeth, gums and bones.
Are there more than one option to choose from?
15 years ago, there was only one option: Metallic braces. They are still available and still preferred by orthodontists around the world since they are easy and reliable. They are, however, downright ugly. Many more esthetic options have been developed over the years such as:
-
Clear braces:
They use the same principles as metal braces, but they look very different. Instead of metal, the brackets are made of a transparent ceramic material. With a wire that is coated with a white cover, and transparent elastics, the whole assembly is a lot better looking than metal braces.
-
Lingual braces:
A relatively new option. One that is gaining a lot of attention for one simple fact: it looks amazing. In fact, it looks like you are not even wearing braces. Lingual braces are attached to the inner surface of the teeth. So to the outside world, you have nothing on. It is still annoying to tongue and palate, and quite costly, but a very appealing option especially for adults.
-
Invisalign:
One of the greatest inventions in the world of orthodontics. Brackets, wires and elastics give way to clear plastic molds called aligners. These apply pressure to the teeth, and move them where we need. It looks better, is far more comfortable, and more hygienic as well.
